After redeeming the Duchess Saidra D’Honaire and even briefly battling Gaunter o’Dimm, the Wayfinders returned to the Carnival to leave Dementlieu for good, only to find that the Carnival had hastily departed without them. Following o’Dimm’s final words of advice before he disappeared, they sought out the massive ghostly ship docked at Port-a-Lucine: the Relentless, and found themselves expected. After boarding, they watched the ship brave a storm that took them directly into the Mists, and when they at last emerged on the other side, they found themselves upon a vast, fog-filled ocean: the Sea of Sorrows. Here, they are at the whim and mercy of their captain, Pietra van Riese, and her ghostly ship and crew. What misadventures will the Wayfinders endure as they voyage to their final Domain of Dread?
